Sévres ‘Jasmin’ Cup, c. 1814-1824, Gilded porcelain
This object had been previously restored, and the decision was made not to reverse the bonds or remove the fills, as this would cause unnecessary wear and stress to the object. The aim of the treatment was to achieve a sympathetic finish on this highly reflective surface.
Care was taken not to damage the original surface while smoothing fills, and the decision was made to leave break lines visible on the interior so that a minimal amount of original gilding was covered by new gold. After extensive practice using a trial object, the cup was gilded using a combination of gold leaf and powder and was burnished to achieve a reflective shine.
