Staffordshire Flat-back Spill Vase, 19th Century, Fine white earthenware

This colorful earthenware spill vase was shattered into numerous shards and had several small losses. The goal of the treatment was to reassemble the vase and fully inpaint the losses. The pieces were edge-bonded with Paraloid B-72. Deep losses were given core-fills of Paraloid B-72 bulked with glass microballoons, which were then skimmed with Flugger.

Fills were inpainted using Golden Porcelain Restoration Glaze mixed with dry powder pigments. The inpainting was applied in thin wash-like layers and gradually built up to imitate the surrounding glaze. This was polished to achieve a glossy finish. Losses to the gilded banding line at the object’s base were gilded using Mixtion Charbonnel gold size and gold powder.
